Linux PC Project Linux Blog [Valid RSS]

In these pages we hope to find out whether a Linux PC can sit happily within the expectations of the average PC user - who is probably already more used to a Windows-based PC for their everyday computing activities.

And we'd like to do it for free!!

We will cover the installations of several Linux distributions and compare the ease of installation and the depth of technical expertise required to get "up and running".

The PC will be expected to be able to browse the Internet, and access email, Instant Messaging and webcam support, playback of CDs and DVDs and also burning CDs. On top of this we want office functionality, ie: word processing, spreadsheet and desktop publishing. Image manipulation ie: touching up digital photos, etc., and playback of digital music such as MP3s. Linux games will also be tested. In summation - just about everything the all-round PC-using family would like to do with their home PC.

Our PC is a virtual machine running under VMWare GSX Server using an AMD 4800 dual core plus 4gb of RAM with Windows XP as the host operating system. The virtual machine should perform in a similar fashion to a PIII 800mhz-based pc, therefore simulating an average family's second pc.
